"High-security" is not a regulated term in the lock industry. Any company can print it on the box. The terms that mean something are UL 437 (Underwriters Laboratories listing for high-security cylinders) and ANSI/BHMA Grade 1. Those are tested, audited certifications. Even then, there is a spectrum within those categories.
Bump resistance addresses a specific attack: a "bump key" — a specially cut key blank — is inserted and struck sharply, causing the driver pins to momentarily jump above the shear line simultaneously. Standard spring pins are vulnerable. Security pins (spool, serrated, mushroom) interrupt the attack by requiring the plug to rotate partially at each pin column, which a bump cannot achieve. Most residential Grade 1 deadbolts today (Schlage B60N, Kwikset 980) include some security pins. They are better than the Grade 2 and 3 hardware they replaced. They are not bump-proof.
What UL 437 actually tests
A UL 437 listed cylinder must withstand picking for 10 minutes (Grade 1 pick resistance), drilling for 10 minutes (with varying bit types), pulling, prying, and disassembly attacks. That is a meaningful bar. The cylinders that hold that rating — Medeco Maxum, Mul-T-Lock MT5+, ASSA Abloy Protec2, Abloy Protec2 (disk detainer, genuinely exceptional) — use design features that go beyond security pins.
Medeco uses angled, rotating pins — the key bitting lifts each pin AND rotates it to a specific angle, and a sidebar verifies all angles are correct. You need to move pins to the right height AND the right rotation simultaneously; raking and standard SPP attacking does not work. Mul-T-Lock uses a telescoping pin system inside each pin stack — effectively two locks operating in series on each column — plus a sidebar. These are not marketing claims; they are published mechanisms that the picking community has verified are genuinely more difficult.
When a high-security cylinder makes sense for a Las Vegas home
Most burglaries in Las Vegas residential neighborhoods are not cylinder attacks. The Las Vegas Metro Police crime data consistently shows forced entry (kicking, prying) and window entry dominate. A hardened strike plate with 3-inch structural screws and a Grade 1 deadbolt addresses 80% of the actual threat profile for most homes in Spring Valley, Henderson, or Summerlin.
High-security cylinders make sense when: you have a specific threat context (stalking, restraining order situation, prior targeted break-in); you are protecting a business or property with high-value contents; you are adding a key-control story (restricted keyways on Mul-T-Lock and Medeco mean duplicates cannot be made without your authorization at a licensed dealer — important for rental properties and offices); or you simply value the additional security for its own sake and want the best available.
The honest answer: for most Las Vegas homeowners, a ANSI Grade 1 Schlage B60N with a proper strike reinforcement kit ($25) is the correct investment. For the customer who wants a UL-listed cylinder because the situation warrants it or because they want to, the Medeco Maxum installed is $200–$350 and is the most credentialed residential cylinder available.
