Honest Assessments, Always
If refinishing is the right answer, we say so. We have turned down replacement jobs worth three times more than the refinish because the floor did not need replacing. Our long-term reputation is not for sale.
Dustless Refinishing — Minneapolis, MN
Minneapolis Floor Pros — Installed Right, Built to Last
Heartwood Flooring started in a Longfellow garage in 2011, the same year Erik Lindqvist decided that doing floors the right way was more valuable than doing them the fast way. He had spent his teens helping his uncle refinish the old-growth fir and pine floors common in Minneapolis craftsmen and bungalows — the kind of work where you learn to read a floor before you touch it, to find the moisture, to check the structure, and to understand that a beautiful finish on a bad subfloor is a warranty callback waiting to happen. When he went out on his own, he brought that approach with him and built every hire around it.
The Twin Cities flooring market gave Heartwood room to grow. Minneapolis housing stock skews old — a huge share of the owner-occupied homes that call us were built between 1910 and 1960, with original hardwood that has been covered by carpet for forty years and forgotten. Uncovering those floors, diagnosing what they need, and deciding honestly whether to refinish or replace is work that requires experience and integrity in equal measure. We built our reputation on calling it correctly — telling a Linden Hills homeowner her floors can be refinished three more times instead of selling her a replacement she does not need, and telling a St. Louis Park homeowner that the soft spot under his kitchen floor is a subfloor failure that has to be fixed before any finish floor goes down.
Today Heartwood operates two installation crews and a dedicated refinishing team working across the Twin Cities. Our installers are NWFA-certified, our moisture readings are documented on every job, and every written quote is flat-rate — the number before the job starts is the number on the invoice. Over 1,800 Minneapolis families trust us with their floors, and most of them found us through a neighbor who had us in their home first. That is the metric we care about most.
01 / What we stand for
If refinishing is the right answer, we say so. We have turned down replacement jobs worth three times more than the refinish because the floor did not need replacing. Our long-term reputation is not for sale.
You get one number before we start — materials, labor, subfloor prep, and haul-away included. No change orders after the floor is open, no per-hour billing that runs over schedule.
Every finished floor is inspected at measure for moisture, flatness, and structural integrity. Prep work needed is quoted up front. We have never charged a customer for subfloor work they did not agree to.
We know Minneapolis housing stock — the age of its hardwood, the humidity cycles it faces, the subfloor systems common in each era of construction. That local knowledge shows up in every recommendation.
Every install and refinish is backed for two years. If a board lifts, a finish hazes, or a joint opens within that window, we return and make it right at no cost. The warranty transfers with the home.
02 / The crew
Master Installer & Owner
MN Contractor License #CF-20184, NWFA Certified, 14 yrs
Erik grew up refinishing floors with his uncle in the Longfellow neighborhood, working weekends through high school and earning his NWFA certification at 24. He founded Heartwood in 2011 with one rule from those early jobs: never lay a floor on a subfloor you would not put in your own house. That standard has guided every hire, every quote, and every warranty call since. He lives two miles from the shop in Whittier and still personally reads moisture on every first visit.
Senior Installer — Hardwood & Refinishing
NWFA Certified Sanding & Finishing Technician, 9 yrs
Sofia leads the refinishing crew and is the person Heartwood customers specifically request when they have a floor with character — century-old white oak in a Linden Hills craftsman, original fir in a St. Paul Victorian. She has an eye for reading grain direction and matching stain across different species, and she introduced the dustless sanding system that cut customer complaints about airborne grit to zero.
LVP & Tile Specialist
CTEF Certified Tile Installer, 7 yrs
Marcus handles the hard substrate work — large-format tile, wet-area waterproofing, heated-floor rough-ins, and the glue-down LVP installs that require prep most crews skip. He spent two years working on multi-family renovations in the North Loop before joining Heartwood, which means he is fast without cutting corners. Customers in the remodel world know his name and ask for him by it.
Project Coordinator & Estimator
Certified Flooring Inspector, 11 yrs
Diane does the free measures and writes every estimate that leaves the Heartwood office. She is a Certified Flooring Inspector, which means she knows how to read a moisture meter, identify substrate problems before they become warranty claims, and explain the difference between species clearly enough that customers make confident choices. Clients in Edina and St. Louis Park mention her by name in nearly every five-star review.
No pressure. No upsell. Just fixed.
