Compassionate Care from Nose to Tail
Dr. Elena Cervantes grew up in a small town in the Willamette Valley where her family raised goats, chickens, and a rotating cast of stray dogs that wandered onto the property. By the time she was twelve, she was the neighborhood kid who nursed injured birds back to health and convinced her parents to let her keep an iguana in her bedroom. Veterinary medicine was never a choice — it was inevitable.
After earning her DVM at Oregon State and completing an exotic animal fellowship, Elena returned to Portland in 2004 and opened Pawsome Veterinary Care on Hawthorne Blvd. Portland was a natural fit — the city consistently ranks among the most pet-friendly in the country, and the Hawthorne neighborhood's culture of community and care aligned perfectly with her practice philosophy. She was one of the first vets in Multnomah County to pursue Fear Free certification, redesigning exam rooms with non-slip floors, pheromone diffusers, and separate cat and dog waiting areas to reduce patient stress. Dr. James Patterson joined in 2008 and brought advanced surgical capabilities that let Pawsome handle complex orthopedic cases and emergencies in-house instead of referring them out.
Twenty-two years later, Pawsome cares for over 6,800 patients — dogs, cats, rabbits, reptiles, and birds — many of them rescues from Oregon Humane Society and local foster networks that the Portland community supports so passionately. The practice earned AAHA accreditation in 2019, placing it among the top 15% of veterinary hospitals in North America. The team launched Pawsome Wellness Plans in 2021 to give pet parents a predictable monthly cost for preventive care. Elena still sees patients five days a week, still keeps a rescue iguana in her office, and still believes that less fear means better medicine.
“To provide compassionate, fear-free veterinary care that treats every pet like family and every pet parent like a partner in their animal's health.”
The principles that drive Pawsome Veterinary Care
Every interaction — from a routine vaccine to end-of-life support — is handled with gentleness, patience, and genuine empathy for both the pet and the family.
We believe the best treatment is the one you never need. Our wellness plans and early screening programs catch problems before they become emergencies or expensive surgeries.
Pheromone diffusers, non-slip exam tables, separate species waiting areas, treats at every step, and gentle handling techniques. Less stress means better outcomes for every patient.
You know your pet better than anyone. We listen to your observations, explain our findings in plain language, and build treatment plans together so you always feel informed and in control.
Only about 15% of veterinary practices in North America meet AAHA accreditation standards. We voluntarily pursue this because your pet deserves hospital-grade care, equipment, and protocols.
The professionals behind our success
Founder & Chief Veterinarian
DVM, Fear Free Certified, Exotic Animal Specialist, 22 years
Dr. Cervantes founded Pawsome after completing her residency and exotic animal fellowship at Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She was one of the first vets in Multnomah County to earn Fear Free certification and redesigned the clinic to reflect Portland's deep love for animals. She sees exotic species — birds, reptiles, and small mammals — alongside traditional patients five days a week.
Surgical & Emergency Specialist
DVM, Advanced Surgical Training (CSU), ACVS Residency, 18 years
Dr. Patterson handles all surgical cases from routine spays to complex orthopedic repairs and emergency stabilizations. He completed advanced surgical training at Colorado State and brings a steady, methodical approach to the operating room that keeps both pets and pet parents calm.
Lead Registered Veterinary Technician
RVT, CVT, Veterinary Dental Specialist, 12 years
Lisa manages dental procedures, anesthesia monitoring, and post-operative recovery. Pet parents frequently comment on how calm and gentle she is with nervous animals, especially cats. She runs the practice's dental wellness program and trains junior technicians.
Patient Care Coordinator
CVA, Pet First Aid Certified, Compassionate Care Specialist
Marcus is the first person you meet at Pawsome. He remembers every patient by name, manages the pet portal and wellness plan enrollments, and coordinates follow-up care so nothing falls through the cracks. Pet parents regularly credit him for making stressful visits feel manageable.
