Why DIY Ant Spray Almost Always Makes the Problem Worse

Feb 10, 2026·5 min read·Ants

Every spring and fall, Tampa hardware stores sell out of residual ant sprays. And every spring and fall, we get calls from homeowners who sprayed their kitchen trail and now have ants in three new locations they had never seen before. This is not bad luck — it is ant biology.

Ghost ants (Tapinoma melanocephalum) are the most common interior ant in Hillsborough County homes, and they are polygyne — meaning each colony has multiple queens, not just one. When a polygyne colony detects a chemical threat at its foraging trail, the queens do not die. They split. Worker groups escort one or more queens to new satellite locations, establish new nesting sites, and continue foraging from multiple directions. This is called budding, and it is exactly what that can of spray triggers.

What targeted treatment actually does

An effective ant treatment starts with species identification — ghost ants respond differently than fire ants, carpenter ants, and white-footed ants (all active in Tampa). For ghost ants, the correct approach is slow-acting gel bait placed directly on active trails, not a spray anywhere near the trail. Worker ants carry the bait back to the colony and feed it to queens and brood before they die. The kill is systemic and reaches the reproductives that a spray never touches.

We also trace the trail to its source. In Tampa homes the source is almost always exterior: a landscape bed touching the foundation, a mulch border against the slab, a gap in the soffit or weep screed where foragers enter. Treating the interior without addressing the exterior harborage is guaranteed to produce recurring infestations.

The moisture angle

Ghost ants are called ghost ants in part because they are attracted to moisture — they need it to thrive. Tampa's humidity provides it everywhere, but specifically: leaking irrigation heads near the foundation, poor gutter drainage against the slab, and condensation drip from AC units are the three moisture sources we find most consistently under active ghost ant trails in Tampa homes. Fix the moisture, treat the colony, seal the entry — in that order.

If you have sprayed a trail and seen your ant problem expand rather than shrink, that is not a product failure. That is colony survival working exactly as evolution designed it. Call us, and we will identify the species and design a treatment that reaches the queens.
